Diploma in Building Environmental Systems Technology

Program Overview

NAIT's Building Environmental Systems Technology program will teach you the engineering theory and conceptual aspects of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) integration in building systems. Students will analysis, design, install and commission HVACR controls and equipment. Emphasis of the program will be placed on using the latest industry specific software to design building mechanical systems. Analyzing, commissioning and trouble shooting building automation control systems will also be focused on.

A pathway into apprenticeship; a graduate of this program will receive recognition towards the 3rd period of technical training in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (RACM) apprenticeship program. Graduates will receive full recognition towards the 3rd period of RACM once they successfully challenge the 3rd period trade qualifications exam and obtain their on the job training hours.

To be accepted into this second-year diploma program, you must have graduated from the one-year Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Refrigeration (HVACR) Technician certificate program or the one year HVAC Specialist certificate program or have completed the 2nd year Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprenticeship program. The Building Environmental Systems Technology program provides access to advanced career opportunities not available with the one-year HVACR Technician certificate.

What You Will Learn
Hands-on, industry-relevant skills
Your studies will focus on the engineering theory and conceptual aspects of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) integration in building systems. Advanced trade-related refrigeration courses are also included

  • Design and operation of mechanical systems, control integration and commercial refrigeration used in buildings and manufacturing processes
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanical system design utilizing CAD
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanical estimating, contract management and project management
  • Energy auditing and alternative energy management strategies

This program provides greater industry access and employment flexibility, and it will enable you to focus your training on a broad range of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration job market.
