Overview

We are more than just another postsecondary institution; we’re a culturally diverse, close-knit community of individuals, delivering exceptional education and training to an average of 7,000 combined full and part-time students per year.

With highly-trained instructors, smaller class sizes and a dynamic learning environment, we offer practical, hands-on programs and courses that will give you the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to succeed.

Our main campus is situated on 130 acres of park-like property located right in the heart of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Our campus has beautifully treed grounds, a shallow, twisting river and a network of walking paths.

We also boast a state-of-the-art Aviation Centre of Excellence facility, located at the Thunder Bay International Airport. This 59,000 square feet facility is comprised of two large hangers, classrooms, shops and labs for three aviation programs.

Along with our main campus in Thunder Bay, we also have seven regional campuses located across northwestern Ontario, in the communities of Dryden, Fort Frances, Kenora, Greenstone, Marathon, Sioux Lookout and Red Lake.

We have been serving the citizens of northwestern Ontario since 1967, by meeting the educational needs of students in a catchment area of 550,000 square kilometres – that’s about the size of France!

Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be fulfilled to get admitted to Confederation College

International students are considered on a case-by-case basis. There can be some additional requirements, depending on the program you are applying to.
Students are required to submit their original transcripts from their last attended academic institutions. If they are not in English, then submit the translated copies of the same along with the originals.
Should provide the certificate issued by the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) that compares educational credentials from other countries to educational standards in Canada.
Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of the beginning of the course.
You need to submit your English language proficiency test scores if you are coming from a non-English speaking country.

Please note: If you are not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, you must obtain a valid study permit before you come to Canada.

Opportunities

Student Career Services
Career Coaching & Employer Services: We support the College community by providing expertise in career readiness and development to allow our past, present and future learners meet their career potential. We will work collaboratively with industry partners to support our upcoming graduates and alumni to secure meaningful employment.

Co-operative Education (Co-op): Alternating full time study and the opportunity for full-time employment while remaining a student. In the workplace, there is general exposure to different work settings and progression in work experience. Co-op Programs are 4 months, full time and occur May to August.

Work Placement: Work Placements are integrated learning experiences and are scheduled during the final semester of a post-secondary program that offers a Work Placement. Work Placements provide an excellent opportunity for students to bridge academic skills and theory to continuous learning in the workplace. Successful completion of the Work Placement is the final step towards graduation and professional employment.

Accomodation

Students need to plan their stay well in advance of their arrival in Canada as all accommodation options fill up quickly, well before the start of the semester. Each option has its distinct advantages, so please carefully read the descriptions below to determine which accommodation option is best for you.

Off-Campus Accommodations
Thunder Bay has a variety of off-campus rental housing options including single homes, duplexes and apartments. Students wishing to live off-campus need to research availability on their own and should arrive well before the start of term to do so. While the International Education Centre is unable to arrange off-campus housing for interested students, students can also connect with other international students looking for off-campus accommodation, through our Facebook page/group.

Note: Rental charges often do not include the cost of utilities, such as charges for heat and water, internet access and cable television. Accounts may need to be established with individual utility providers for these services. Please confirm with the landlord what utilities are included in the rent and which need to be arranged and paid for separately.

Also note, that most rental accommodation in Thunder Bay is rented unfurnished. This means that you may have to budget and arrange for the purchase and delivery of furniture.

Finally, most landlords require first and last month’s rent in advance of you moving in. Please budget accordingly. Rent is generally paid on the first of each month.

On-Campus Accommodations

The Spruce and Cedar Residence offers fully furnished units, laundry facilities and a fully equipped common kitchen. Complete with a four bedroom apartment style living. This residence option also provides students with an in-suite kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities. To find out more and apply click here

Sibley Hall Residence is home to 229 students every year. The residence has recently been renovated and is a safe, community-oriented residence with five room style options. Prices vary based on the type of room. Each room includes a single bed, wardrobe, small fridge and microwave and some have private en-suite baths. All students staying in residence must also purchase a meal plan: this is not optional. Find out more and apply click here.

Important: Residence fills up quickly and students need to apply well in advance of their arrival in order to ensure a room. Residence is not typically available for the January intake. Students MUST commit to staying in Residence for the full academic year. Once school is over, students must vacate their room or speak directly with officials at Residence regarding prolonging their stay during the vacation period.

Scholarships

Confederation College has entry and in-program scholarships, bursaries and awards available for its international students to assist with their education costs. Applications are considered based on financial need, academics and/or community involvement. Students can apply for these scholarships while they are studying at the college.

In-program Scholarships:

The following is a list of scholarships, awards and bursaries that are specific to international students. Every year, the International Education Centre (IEC) awards over $150,000 in scholarships to its international students. This includes the prestigious International Student Excellence Award valued at $2,500.

Students can apply for these in-program scholarships while they are studying at the college.

Entry-level Scholarships:

Engineering Program Scholarship - September 2024 intake: Students who enrol in selected undergraduate engineering programs in September 2024 intake are eligible for this scholarship. Students will receive a $1000 (CAD) scholarship as a tuition credit. The scholarship will be applied to the student’s account, once they are registered, & after the withdrawal date. It can be used towards future tuition payments.
