Fri December 7, 2018     1004

Applying for higher education to universities located abroad can be overwhelming and intimidating at the same time. Several official procedures, paperwork, and well-detailed research are required while applying for educational institutes out of one's own country. Canadian Universities also have some peculiar systems for application, and therefore, a student must fulfill every criterion to make it to the best possible institute.

RESEARCH WORK – 10 to 12 Months:

A student willing to go abroad must start his research about the place, college as well as the course he wishes to pursue well in advance. A student must note down his strengths and weaknesses, the pros and cons of the university, and numerous such details. A student must look at websites, prospectus from colleges, scholarship and funding, etc.

STANDARD TESTS – 9 to 10 Months:

The Universities and Colleges located in Canada mostly base their admission procedure on English Proficiency Examinations such as IELTS and TOEFL. Individual universities and colleges also find their assessments on exams such as GMAT, GRE, SAT, etc. Students must devote an ample amount of time to gain specific experience in these exams and fare well in the said exams.

APPLICATION PROCESS – 7 to 8 Months:

Once the students have pinned down a college or university, keeping in mind aspects like place, finances, course requirements as well as language barriers, the application procedure begins. There are several detailed sub procedures involved in the application process:

Application Form: Including all the personal and professional details about the applicant concerning the particular college they wish to attend.

Statement of Purpose: SOP is one of the most critical aspects of an individual's overseas study application. The SOP includes all details about applicants like background, education, reason due to which he/she wished to pursue the said course, and so on. SOP can make or mar a person's overseas educational dream, and thus a lot of deliberation must be put into its construction.

Academic Record Transcripts: This translates into the academic records of the prospective student, including his previous degrees, diplomas, matriculation certificates, senior secondary school certificates, any prior experience or recommendation letters.

Letter of Recommendation: An LOR is an academic, professional letter of recommendation describing at length the achievements, academia, experience, and contribution during the college life of the applicants. In case the applicant has a working knowledge that must be included in the LOR too. The LOR helps the Admissions Council to make decisions about the applications.

Curriculum Vitae (CV): To get more comprehensive, in-depth information about the applicant, the council delves into the CV of the applicant. The CV also provides a professional timeline of the applicant's profile. The CV has a professional record of all certificates, internships, and working experiences in an accurate, precise manner.

Test Scores: Another very major landmark in one's educational journey overseas is the examination score, such as IELTS and TOEFL. These scores most definitely decide if an individual will get the desired college or not.

ACCEPTANCE LETTERS & ADMISSION PROCESS – 3 to 4 Months:

Once the applicant starts receiving acceptance letters and personal interview calls, he/she must not delay any further and must be prompt in their reply. The applicant must make a well sought after decision after consulting their counselor or academic advisor and must deposit the required amount of money at the earliest.

VISA APPLICATION – 2 to 3 Months:

The applicant must gather all of his/her required documentation at the earliest for the visa application. Most countries allow visa application three months before the date of arrival, and hence, the applicant must be thorough with his/her paperwork and must consult his/her IDP counselor at the earliest.

PRE DEPARTURE – 1 to 2 Months:

During this time, students have to decide on accommodation, airline tickets, and international credit and debit cards, and so on. It is these months' when students feel nervous and experience pre-departure jitters.

Also listed below are the significant intakes months for students who wish to travel to Canada for higher education:

WINTER INTAKE: Winter Intake is also referred to as the January Intake and extends from January till April. Often considered as an extension of the Fall Intake, the winter intake is usually utilized by students who fail it to make it in the Fall Intake and hence wish to go overseas well in time. This intake provides the student an entire year before him/her without waiting for over a year.

FALL INTAKE: Commonly known as the September Intake, this is the most important of all intakes with the maximum number of students desiring to get in during this time. This intake has the most significant number of institutes that offer courses and continues from September to December. This intake helps students prepare themselves for the harsh winters to come as well as gives them a chance to be almost 4-5 months ahead of students going in for the January Intake.

SPRING INTAKE: Spring Intake takes place between May till August and is the last preference for all students in terms of intakes. Less student application is predominantly because this intake does not offer a considerable number of courses for the students. The final dates of application fall somewhere in February, and hence, students must choose their paths well in advance.
